Protect the Child: Digital Glitch

It was supposed to be a simple job. Get in, get a sample, get out, don't get caught. You didn't expect there to be a kid, locked up in a room like a mouse in a box. She says the corpos stole her away from her parents and stuck her full of needles. Now she's in your arms, hands over her ears while the alarm blares, and security drones are blocking your every exit. What do you do?

Digital Glitch is a new, cyberpunk setting for Protect the Child. It includes 7 pre-written characters, all members of a group of cyber-runners, criminals who go on high-stakes jobs to rob the mega-corporations called zaibatsus in order to keep themselves alive. Unfortunately, the lab they were attempting to rob also happened to hold a girl, whose genetic code has gave her super-senses and a hyper-sensitive nervous system after IrisLabs tried a new experimental procedure.

You need the rules for Protect the Child in order to be able to play this game, but right now, since PtC is in playtesting, the rules are free!! Currently downloading the game gives you access to a Google Sheets play-kit. There is also a pdf in the works to be released at a later date.

This play-set was designed for both the Kiwi Jam 2024, and the Dice Exploder Pregen Jam. It's list of inspirations include Hamixh Cameron's The Sprawl, Cory Doctorow's Unauthorized Bread, and ZebraMatt's 24XX Dire Pulse. It contains themes of Infertility, Exploitation, Police Violence, Capitalism, Disability, and Medical Horror.

My trawl through itch.io's game jams continues (see this post for my first find). I wanted to highlight a few more currently running TTRPG (or inclusive of TTRPGs) jams, particularly ones that aren't linked to a particular system. I've also chosen jams that don't rank entries, as a personal preference.

This jam utilises a bunch of titles/pitches for games as inspiration for those who join. The idea is that you take that title/pitch and make a short TTRPG using it.

Pride in the Fall Jam!

If you're in the TTRPG space on Tumblr, you've likely already seen this one floating around. @efangamez launched this one, focusing on (and I mean focusing in an incredibly broad sense here) the queer community/experience. For a TTRPG (or other piece of media) to be included, it must involve queerness in some way, be made within the past year, and you must fall under the 2SLGBTQIA+ umbrella. That's it. Go wild.

The only other rules are that it must be a TTRPG, and that it must be free from bigotry - standard stuff.

Tfw you're running the quick start for some friends, but you're one pregen short.

Solution: I made a guy.

Now, how did I make a guy if the book isn't out yet, you may ask.

Simple: I made shit up. Is it balanced? Probably not. Could probably use some more flaws but I'm running this for people who've never played this system before, so they really don't know how to break it yet.

For legal reasons I am going to state: this is homebrew and entirely based off of patterns I noticed within the pregens and my own understanding of FL lore. I have NOT seen any character creation material and this sheet is NOT official.

If you, too, want to run for 6 players and are a pregen short, I've included screenshots of the sheet below.

I also think it would be more fun if people attempted to make characters without the character creation materials, so if anyone else makes an attempt, I'd love to see it.

Yippeeeeee never a bother. All for One's system is half pregenic because of quirk bs, but he also developed DID due to his trauma

Pregenic alters

All for one (quirk) works as it does in canon, with the original user appearing in the vestige world. In this AU, these vestiges can take over the user's body unless the quirk is properly trained (the base quirk and stolen quirk). This is how Zen can take over Tomura's body once he's given a copy of all for one, while Zen has over a century of practice with it

His first "alter", and his first stolen quirk, was his mother's. She kept him and Yoichi alive until Zen got his quirk under control and stopped allowing her to take over

These "alter"s no longer front as he doesn't allow them to, but he still can interact with them in the vestige world and hear them in his head throughout the day

Traumagenic alters

Between being an orphan on the streets with a twin brother to take care of, having to witness violence/riots, killing people himself, any harm that came to the two of them that he/his mother scapegoated, and his grooming/child marriage to Ujiko, he has more than enough trauma to develop DID, and is a HC-DID/C-DID system depending on where you draw the line between the two

He has no specific alters that are relevant to the plot, as he's not a POV character and more of just an antagonist, but his system is pretty functional after working with each other for a long time

His littles are very fond of Kurogiri, and go on little dates with Ujiko. Yahoo

His host is a fictive of the Demon Lord (comic book villain)

So the Transformers RPG's Beginner Box: Roll Out set is coming with the scenario of the core rulebook and the first scenario of the A Time Is Now campaign book, and character guides for Hound, Gauge, Anode, Aileron, Smokescreen, Novastar, Beachcomber, and Springer, some of whom were stand-ins for player characters in A Time Is Now including in the art for the book. This is releasing in May.

Gauge, Aileron, and Anode have actual character guides for suggestions of how to play them!!! Arcee, who is the quartermaster of the Ark and an npc in A Time Is Now, also had a pregen released a while ago as free bonus material as a warrior sentinel (which means she's specialized in melee weapons/martial arts generally and deflecting attacks and such and can have an extra shield or parrying weapon, can manifest energon weapons without spending energon, has more free actions, etc) with a gladiator influence.

So um if there is anybody out there looking to play some of the (trans) lesbian gals of transformers and their mentee (admittedly in Anode's case assuming she was just Arcee's friend like in IDW1 she's more like Gauge's aunt but we're pretty sure everyone following us is aware that we very much adore the Greenlight/Aileron/Anode/Arcee/Lug/Lancer ship that we're more or less responsible for being one of the first to toss around on the internet) or would like that to be their introduction to the game this is a thing you will be able to do in a few months.

Just. Just really blown away. We're just overjoyed, especially with everything happening right now that makes life for gender and orientation expansive folk so hard, that Renegade committed to showing some more of these bots. Very curious what Anode's art will look like since she hasn't had any of her IDW art shown in the book yet, Aileron got some new art in the TTRPG as did Gauge.

*coughs* obviously if you play Aileron *cough* there is an obvious npc in A Time Is Now to romance in the game if that's something people at the table including the GM who'd be playing her is cool with that *wheezes in lesbian*-

assuming its not already an established relationship and this is just more of a family adventure of some alien robot lesbians (okay look we have to note that the same gender loving transformer gals probably wouldn't call themselves lesbians they might have their own words for that and gender stuff but this is not the post to talk about the orientation and aesthetic systems we've come up with for transforming alien robots) and their friends and their daughter. I um wow this a thing. wow even though things can be crud this really actually happened. We actually had the honor of playing Gauge in a delightful and harrowing A Time Is Now game with some friends and the mother-daughter moments with Arcee were really fun

Critical Mass

Critical Mass: A Catholic Canto, Canto Games, 1997

The gist of the game is this: you are radioactive Catholic priest/saint superheroes. You sold me right there.

I don't know a lot of the backstory of this game, but I did a little poking around on the 'pedia and my conclusion is that the author was either a lapsed Catholic or a Religious Studies student. The game involves some deep, deeeep cuts of Catholic esoterica. Anything in the Book of Revelations is the shallow end of the pool here. Expect some apocrypha and some saints you've never heard of. Expect a random line from Timothy or Colossians to result in a potential superpower (Profane Babbling and Rescued from Darkness, respectively).

The game doesn't try to model "street-level" characters like Robin or the Punisher. Those are just handled with "Do you have the right background in your hundred-word pre-ascension backstory? Awesome, don't botch." Instead, superpowers are the core of your character. You spend points on set of fairly badass powers, like "Healing Stigmata" and "Blinded by Glory". They'd fit into a lot of EXTREME!! 90s comics well. The art matches.

One issue is that the number of powers can vary a lot. You have 100 points, and point values are on the Fibonacci sequence, so you can have one power at level 11, two of them at 9 and an 8... or twenty of them at 5. And 5 is still pretty useful. You can use Wings of the Angels at 5 to fly at 60 miles an hour. You can lift a car with Strength of Samson 5. What would you like for your other eighteen powers? The pregens all have powers rated from 6-10, and it feels like the authors just didn't quite game things out. The fact that the XP system is linear instead, with a mandatory spend per power, means that your high-stat characters are going to "transubstantiate" (go thermonuclear) at power level 15 much more quickly.

Your foes are, of course, demons and anti-popes and all sorts of generally evil dudes. Not much is given in the way of GM advice, but they do mention the Seven Deadly Sins as a good organizing principle for what the opposition is up to. There's an antichrist metaplot behind the scenes, or maybe I'm just assuming that from some miscellaneous marginalia.

There's also a supplement: Mass Casualties. It's a standard main-book-overflow book, plus a sample scenario that focuses around the theft of a saint's plutonium finger-bone.

the other thing I see frequently in TTRPG youtube is that any remotely crunchy system, from 5e up, is just too much for kids, or if you give the (5e) core-book to any working adult they'll just panic at how much rules there are, and as such you should play their choice of rules-lite system instead

and sure if you just hand someone the PHB they will panic, but since when has that been the way to introduce someone new to the hobby, like jusus fuck,

no, you sit them down with the PHB (or your choice of player-facing RPG core-book) and you walk them through genning their first character, you give a basic instruction of how stuff works, and you prepare to do a bit of handholding through the first session or so, or you let them pick from a handful of pregen characters, basic instructions, handholding through the first session or so

if your first introduction to ttrpgs was someone throwing a book at you with the suggestion you read it, they did you a disservice

The way All for One works as a quirk here is that the quirks' users are absorbed into the vestige world (inner world of sorts), and then the user has to train the quirk to keep those people supressed inside of themself, which is how All for One is able to possess Tomura. So they've technically both got a bunch of randoms running around in there

State of Ark 22: BTE Post-Launch News

Greetings, Dan here! So it's been just over a month since the Beneath Twisted Earth Print Edition launched on DriveThruRPG, and we've been busy in the background. I just wanted to take a moment to check in, and let folks know what to look forward to. First and foremost, development continues on Beneath Twisted Earth: Overdrive. This expansion will feature new options for pilots, their mechs (including combiners), new factions with associated contracts, adversaries, paranormal elements that can be added to campaigns, and most recently an expansion of Oceanic Threats. Content development is in late stages with the next phase being proof reading and art development. We're not quite at the stage yet to share an estimate of completion.  So keep your eyes out.

Next, I've begun working on some new crossover pregens with other mecha ttrpg creators. It's too early to share who just yet, but look forward to it.

Some of you may have noticed, but a second Cloudshore Games rpg was released in alpha as part of the Minimalist Game Jam run by our friends at Binary Star Games. There Is No Outside, is a game of survival and community building in a liminal labyrinth. The alpha version has been going through playtesting, and a full Free Version is in the final stages now. This first release is expected to be available by early spring. Why this game is relevant for followers of Beneath Twisted Earth is not just to show support for Cloudshore Games' new project, but also because There Is No Outside also uses the same Vibe System as BTE. That means the new game is compatible with existing BTE material. Characters from one game could easily be converted into the other with minimal effort, and game-unique mechanics could be carried over as well! Those who paid attention during the previews of BTE Overdrive may also even find a certain familiar organization making an appearance there as well. Lastly, something I've always been a fan of is sporting emblems from my favorite franchises on clothes, stickers, and more. Since JGD was kind enough to create all the fantastic faction logos, and propaganda art for the BTE Premium editions, I started working on setting up a print on demand workshop so folks can show off their favorite factions! Stay tuned for more details on that.

That is everything going on for Cloudshore Games for the moment. Most things are in development, but fairly far along. I would look forward to seeing some things come out this year. Things may be turbulent for many of us right now, but we must forge ahead. No one can change who we are and what we love. So the best thing we can do is keep true to ourselves!
